Introduction

Santander is a 5th class municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines. It is bounded southheast by Cebu Strait, southhwest by Tañon Strait, on the northeast by municipality of Oslob and on the northwest by the municipality of Samboan.

History

The town was created in 1898. Old folks popularly called the place Tañong named after the turbulent waters of Tañon Strait. Later on, it was renamed Santander upon the recommendation of a Spanish prince who hailed from Santander, Spain.

Economy

Santander’s main industries are fishing and agriculture.

Santander is situated in the southernmost tip of the island of Cebu and is about 134 kilometers from Cebu City. The municipality is bounded southheast by Cebu Strait, southhwest by Tañon Strait, on the northeast by municipality of Oslob and on the northwest by the municipality of Samboan.

How to Get There

Santander can be reached by public buses or V-Hires (vans) from the Cebu South Terminal in Cebu City. Estimated travel time is about 4 hours.

Santander is composed of 10 barangays, namely: Bunlan, Cabutongan, Candamiang, Liloan, Lip-tong, Looc, Pasil, Poblacion, Talisay and Canlumacad.

Population

According to the 2000 census, Santander has a population of 13,842 people in 2,895 households.
