Introduction

Alegria is a 4th class municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines. The municipality is bounded on the north by the municipality of Badian, on the east by the municipalities of Dalaguete, Alcoy and Boljoon, on the south by the municipality of Malabuyoc and on the west by Tañon Strait.

History

Alegria used to be part of the town of Samboan before 1857. It was called, “Tubod,” after a freshwater spring that was provided water for drinking and other uses by residents and travelers. The name Alegria came about when Spanish soldiers, who chanced upon a festive gathering around the spring. The soldiers, who reportedly joined the festivity, had exclaimed, “Que alegre!”

Economy

Agriculture, fishing and backyard farming are the main industries in Alegria, Cebu.

Alegria is situated in the southwestern coast of Cebu and is about 117 kilometers from Cebu City. The municipality is bounded on the north by the municipality of Badian, on the east by the municipalities of Dalaguete, Alcoy and Boljoon, on the south by the municipality of Malabuyoc and on the west by Tañon Strait.

How to Get There

Alegria can be reached by public buses or V-Hires (vans) from the Cebu South Terminal in Cebu City. Estimated travel time is about 3-4 hours.
