Introduction

Alcantara is a 5th class municipality in the province of Cebu, Philippines. The municipality is bounded on the north by Municipality of Ronda, on the south by Municipality of Moalboal and on the east by Municipality of Argao.

History

Alcantara was used to be called “Kogtong”, a name attributed to a big fish which was said to inhabit a spring in the heart of the town. When the Spaniards came, they renamed the place Alcantara after a town in Spain.

The town’s main industries are livestock and agriculture

Alcantara is situated in the southwestern coast of the island of Cebu and is about 85 kilometers from Cebu City. It is bounded on the north by Municipality of Ronda, on the south by Municipality of Moalboal and on the east by Municipality of Argao.

How to Get There

Alcantara can be reached by public buses or V-Hires (vans) from the Cebu South Terminal in Cebu City. Estimated travel time is about 3 hours.

Political Subdivisions

Alcantara is composed of 9 barangays. Three barangays which are located on the coastal side, Palanas, Poblacion and Polo, are relatively urbanized while the remaining six barangays, Lawaan, Cabil-isan, Candabong, Salagmaya, Cabadiangan and Manga are in the mountainous area.
