The 30th Sinulog Festival is officially open! Earlier today, no less than Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña (who was on leave during last year’s festivities)

and Vice Mayor and Sinulog Foundation Chairman Michael Rama welcomed thousands of excited (excited to see the mayor again and exciteis for the Sinulog festivities)

cheering spectators at the Cebu City Sports Center (also known as Abellana Sports Complex) for the formal opening ceremonies of this year’s Sinulog Festival.

Now on its 30th installment, the theme this year is “Cebu, Then and Now”. The launching program began with a novena mass at the Basilica Minore del Santo Niño at around 2 in the afternoon.

It was then immediately followed by a street dance / parade by the Miss Cebu candidates…

and 15 schools, colleges and universities from all around Cebu City.

Since this year’s celebration will revolve around the history of Cebu, from prehistoric times to modern Cebu, all the participants were in Filipiñana attires.

From this day onward, expect more and more activities to tickle your senses, all leading to the Sinulog Grand Parade next Sunday, January 17, 2010.

Tomorrow, January 9, 2010, students from participating towns and cities in Cebu Province will be battling it out at the Sinulog sa Kabataan sa Lalawigan, where the top 5 winners will be entitled to join the Sinulog Grand Parade next Sunday.
