FEWER contingents are expected to join this year’s Dinagat-Bakasi Festival in the town of Cordova on Mactan Island, Cebu on Aug. 15 to 16.
Cordova Mayor Adelino Sitoy said that in line with austerity measures, the municipal government found ways to cut costs.
Barangay contingents that participated in previous years’ competitions were merged, reducing the number of contingents to five.
But the prize money was increased to make sure contingents were enthusiastic and competitive.
Cordova’s festival is named after the bakasi or sea eel that fishermen catch and eat.
For the grand showdown, the first placer will get P50,000. Second prize is P30,000; third prize, P20,000; fourth and fifth prize, P10,000.
Prizes will also be given out to the most festive contingents: P30,00 for first place, P20,000 for second place, and P10,000 for third, fourth and fifth place.
The largest delegation will get P30,000, second largest will get, P20,000, while the remaining three delegations will get P10,000 each.
The best choreographer will receive P5,000.
To come up with just five contingents, barangays were grouped together:
• 1st contingent – Poblacion, Catarman and Gilutongan
• 2nd contingent – Alegria, Gabi and Day-as
• 3rd contingent – Buagsong and Bangbang
• 4th contingent – San Miguel, Pilipog and Dapitan
• 5th contingent – Ibabao and Cogon.
Sitoy said no out-of-town contingents were allowed, though tourists are welcome to witness the festivities
