CEBU CITY, Philippines – Part of Magallanes Street in Cebu City fronting the City Hall will stay closed until June due to delays in the completion of landscaping works for City Hall.
Vice Mayor Michael Rama said the P5 million that the Philippine Tourism Authority (PTA) released for the landscaping project has run out. The city government is awaiting the release of another P6 million, since the PTA promised a total of P11 million for the project.

But before the P6-million balance could be released, Rama said the PTA wanted a report on how the P5 million was spent, as well as an explanation of variations in the project.
One variation was the presence of a “compact police station” in the area to be landscaped. The presence of the police station also decreased the parking area from 100 slots to 70 slots.
Rama said the police station was specifically built there to provide peace and order in the area near the Magellan’s Cross and the Basilica del Sto. Niño, which are often visited by tourists.
The change in landscape design may require an additional P2.5 million to P3 million. Rama said the city government would shoulder the extra expense.
Rama left for Manila on Monday to meet with PTA officials.
