Banig Festival Revived

Banig FestivalEight years after it was last held, the Banig Festival of Badian, southern Cebu has been brought to life once again.

Colorful woven mats figured prominently in the newly revived Banig Festival last July 19.

After a parade around the town, the people gathered at the Badian National High School grounds for the contingents’ showdown.

With grace and precision, eight contingents showcased their talents through the dance steps that portray the making of banig or woven mats.

Tribu Patapoba emerged as champion in the street dancing and costume categories. The group was composed of residents from Barangays Poblacion, Taytay, Basak and Patong.

However, according to Badian Mayor Carmencita Lumain, the group will not be representing the town in the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo.

Tribu Magbabaol of Barangays Matutinao, Sulsugan, Sanlagan and Balhaan placed second in the street dancing category. Third place went to Tribu Kasadyaan of Barangays Tubod, Ginablan, Basiao and Malabago.

With her wit and beauty, Ms. Lera Tungcab of Tribu Sanmabuti was crowned as festival queen. Tungcab represented Barangays Bugas, Manduyong, Tigbao and Santicon.

A champion for culture and heritage, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia thanked the Badian officials and residents for reviving the festival, especially considering the upcoming Pasigarbo sa Sugbo.

The Pasigarbo sa Sugbo will be held at the Cebu International Convention Center on August 9. It is one of the highlights of Cebu Province’s 439th anniversary weeklong celebration.

The Pasigarbo is in line with the governor’s campaign for each town to have its own festival.
