Dubai to build a new Cebu port

PRESIDENT Arroyo arrives today bringing investments from Dubai World, one of the biggest conglomerates in the world.

The President yesterday announced that the company, a holding firm that manages a portfolio of businesses for the Dubai government, will build a resort, a port operation in Cebu, and an industrial park on a 42-hectare property in the Subic Bay Freeport.

FOUR years and 15 Suroy-Suroy Sugbo trips later, the Southern Heritage Trail that culminated last Friday was the best ever, Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Provincial Board (PB) Member Agnes Magpale, committee on tourism and international affairs chairperson, agreed.

Traffic trial starts

THE proposed traffic experiment for the Banilad flyover’s construction starts today, even as the Cebu City Council meets with affected sectors and concerned agencies to straighten out some kinks.

SM inks deal to open IMAX cinemas in North EDSA, Cebu

SY-LED SM Prime Holdings, Inc. has signed a deal with IMAX Corp. for the opening of two more theaters in the country following the success of the Mall of Asia cinema.

Rick Camaligan, vice-president for operations of SM’s leisure group, told BusinessWorld that the theaters would be in The Block at SM City North Edsa, Quezon City and SM City Cebu.

PGMA orders construction of port in Southern Cebu

PRESIDENT Arroyo has ordered the Cebu Port Authority (CPA) to build a new port in Southern Cebu, especially in Santander town, which is included in the Roll-on-Roll-off Terminal System (RRTS) project.

RRTS is one of the four components of the Strong Republic Nautical Highway (SRNH), which was launched by Arroyo in 2002 to bring down the cost of transporting goods from one province to another.

FOR the first time since he engaged Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia and Lahug Barangay Captain Mary Ann de los Santos in a verbal war, Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña shared the stage with the two leaders yesterday.

De los Santos and Garcia were at the awarding ceremony at the Cebu Sports Center to receive the prices and trophies for their respective contingents.

Lumad Basakanon won the 1st prize for this year’s Sinulog Free Interpretation category.

They were followed by the municipality of Carmen, Alikaraw Organization of Hilongos, Leyte, Tribu Iliganon of Iligan City, and Tribu Pintaflores of San Carlos City.

The awarding of winners of the 2008 Sinulog Grand Parade was held on Monday (January 21) at the Cebu City Sports Center.
